Veterans Telling Stories is a Minnesota-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to teaching creative writing to military Veterans and their family members. In the process, we strive to build a community upon the shared foundations of passion for the arts and service-based sacrifice.


We offer totally free creative writing classes, workshops, and lectures led by Veteran and Veteran family member instructors.

Throughout 2024, Paul Van Dyke has received Arts Education funding to teach zero-cost creative writing programming to Military Veterans and Family Members. Join us as we hear work from his students and other Veteran and military family writers.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Fall Classes Now Open!!

Two new FREE classes are now open. These are open to all Veterans and family members of Veterans.

Starting September 10th, we will be offering a 10-week long Fiction workshop taught completely online (Tuesdays 6-9pm). This will run until November 12. Sign up for Online Fiction

Starting September 11th, we will be offering a 10-week long Creative Nonfiction workshop taught in-person at the Open Book Building in Minneapolis (Wednesdays 6-9pm). This will run until November 13. Sign up for In-Person CNF.
